About the Islands...
  • Caroline Islands are widely scattered consisting of approximately 500 small coral islands, two republics: the Federated States of Micronesia (approximately 600 islands) and Palau (approximately 250 islands).
  • Gilbert Islands are a chain of sixteen atolls and coral islands.
  • Mariana Islands are arc-shaped consisting of fifteen volcanic mountains.
  • Marshall Islands consists of 29 low-lying atolls, 5 isolated islands, and 1,156 individual islands. There are 23 islands in the Bikini Atoll. 
  • Nauru is an oval-shaped island surrounded by a coral reef. 
  • Wake Island is a coral atoll. Access is restricted and all activities on the island are managed by the United States Air Force (USAF). 

Good to Know
  • Has a low crime rate.
  • Avoid tap water consumption.
  • Surfing is popular in Pohnpei.
  • Dry Season is from December - June.
  • It's illegal to obtain souvenirs of WWII from aircrafts or sunken vessels displayed.
  • Scuba diving ranked in order: Palau, Chuuk, Yap, and Pohnpei. 
  • Wear cotton clothing is recommended.
  • Taxis are often shared.
  • There is no public transportation. 
  • Public drunkenness is a felony (Yap).
  • Rainy Season is July - December.
  • A Departure Tax is imposed, paid to leave each island. 
  • Dominant cash islands, credit cards are not widely accepted, and ATM machines are not available at any of the airports. 
  • Manta Ray Bay Hotel (Yap) has an 1800's wooden phinisi-style ship as its microbrewery pub and restaurant.
  • Taxi Drivers do not often have government issued Driver's Licenses and are considered reckless.
  • On the smaller islands, there are no restaurants.
  • Village Hotel (Pohnpei) is known for their rack of lamb.
  • Women should dress conservatively, covering their knees and thighs in public. 
  • Road generally have few street lights and no traffic signals.
  • There are no daily commercial flights on: Chuuk, Kosrae, or Yap.
  • Commercial flights from the USA are considered international travel regardless of citizenship.
  • Tipping is neither encouraged or expected.
  • Smaller islands have no medical facilities at all. 
  • Healthcare is below our standards. Seek treatment in Australia, Guam, Hawaii, or Japan.
  • The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, therefore safety inspections for equipment and facilities are not commonly practiced. 
  • Prevalent Diseases: Dengue and Chikungunya.
  • Locals do not usually have training in safety or driving skills.
